What's the difference between search and filter?

Summary

Why do some searches in Platinum have both and some just have "Filter on:"?

  • "Search on:" is limited where it looks but is fast.
  • "Filter on:" is thorough but slower.

More Information

Search on:

Entering text in the "Search on:" field will only search the description or name (all three lines for stock codes and just the name for accounts). These are searched very quickly.

For the Stock Control. Typing 'GASKET' will give you a list of stock codes that have the word gasket in the description. The first word you type for the "Search on:" must match the start of the word it is checked against. That is, entering 'ga' would match against 'gasket', but not 'bargain'. Words two and onwards act just like entering text into the "Filter on:".

Filter On

The "Filter on:" field will try and match ALL the words typed there against the details stored against your stock, account or whatever you are searching for. This process is slower than using the "Search on:" but results in a much deeper search.

Any word you type into the "Filter on:" doesn't have to be a whole word or even the first characters of a word. Entering 'ga'' would match against the words 'gasket' and 'bargain'.

These two items can be used together to narrow down the results from a search, neither of these are case sensitive so you can type your search/filter in upper or lower case or a combination of the two.
