Summary

This article will explain various things that should be considered BEFORE transferring Platinum to a new server*. This article only covers the basic information and should not be used as an absolute guide.

More Information

As you can imagine there are various things to be considered prior to transferring Platinum from one server to another. This article will not go into the logistics or cover the technical aspects of the transfer but the main things to consider.

Our support team will need to have administrative rights on the server whether this is via the administrator user or a user specifically set-up.

Transferring Platinum

When it comes to the point of transferring Platinum** from the old server to the new server, it should be done when everyone is out of Platinum.

  • Prior to transferring Platinum we would highly recommend doing a backup of the data as it stands.
  • We would recommend that the hard-drive which contains the Platinum data is placed into the new server and transferred directly.
  • Any sales that are made during the whole transfer and configuring process will need to be done manually and then entered into Platinum once it is back up and running on the new server.

Mapped Network Drives

Platinum runs over the network and is stored on the server, so each terminal will need to have the same drive mappings. This will typically be the P: drive, and will be mapped to a shared public folder on the server.

User Rights

As Platinum will be used over the network, all users that are set up on the old server will need to be set up on the new server. As a general rule all users will need to have full control of the "Public" folder where Platinum is to be installed.

If the Platinum Software has the "CDM Server" module installed there will be a slight alteration to this and should be covered with our support team when reinstalling "CDM Server".
  • Incorrectly setting up the users' rights can result in one of two of the following error messages:
    • File Error: 99 - The user can not see the file that is required.
    • File Error: 94 - The user can see the file but does not have permissions to access the file that is required.

Windows Firewall

Generally the "Windows Firewall" should be disabled as there should be a more appropriate hardware firewall protecting the system.

  • A specific port is used by CDM SERVER, and would need to be opened up on the "Windows Firewall" if you choose to use it. Please contact support for more information if necessary.
If the "CDM Server" module is installed, it is important to Contact your Platinum dealer or our support team on 0116 230 1500 or by using our website support contact page as they will need to reinstall this on the new server.

Router/Firewall

If the new server is not going to be getting the same IP address as the older server, then you will need to check the current set-up on the router/firewall. The server will need to be set to have a static IP address.

  • The Web Daemon module requires a specific port to be open for the server. Please contact support for more information if necessary. If the new server does not have the same IP address as the old server this will need to be updated.

Scheduled Tasks

It is a very common practice to have scheduled tasks running for Platinum operations, whether it is a report, data import, mailshot, cache gather or a back up routine. These will need to be copied to the new server and set up exactly the same as the old server.

Services

At the moment*** Platinum only uses three services which might be running on the server. If any of these are running on the old server, they will need to be installed on the new server.

  • EPC Buddy - Our EPC data exchange service.
  • CDM Server - Our client-server module for larger networks.
  • Catalyst Browser Daemon Server - Our Web Daemon, used for on-line communications.
These should be installed by a member of our support team. Please Contact your Platinum dealer or our sales team on 0116 230 1500 or by using our website sales contact page with regards to arranging for this.

Running Programs

At the moment*** there is only one program that might be running on the server that interacts with Platinum.

  • Vpop3 - A third party mail server that we use.
This should be installed by a member of our support team. Please Contact your Platinum dealer or our sales team on 0116 230 1500 or by using our website sales contact page with regards to arranging for this.

Backup Routines

It is vital that Platinum is backed up daily. If the new server is going to use a third party software it needs to backup the SX folder.

If the new server does not have its own backup software our support team can configure our "SXBackup" program to backup the Platinum data.

Please be aware that even if our support team configure our backup program for you, it remains your responsibility to ensure that Platinum data backups are being taken and that they are complete.
  • Click here for more details on setting up SXBackup.
We would highly recommend that we are involved in all aspects of the transferring of the Platinum Data from the old server to the new server. Out Staff are highly experienced with the Platinum Data and will be able to do checks on the files consistency prior and post data transfer.
Please contact our sales team on 0116 230 1500.

* This article does not cover technical aspects of transferring Platinum. If you require help and assistance for doing this please contact our sales team on 0116 230 1500.

** If we are not employed to transfer the data from the old server to the new server, we will not be held responsible for retrieving any lost data.
